Melissa Ingaglio, Farm Manager, works full-time year round on the Farm.  She grew up on a small Christmas tree farm in rural Auburn, Pennsylvania, but it was not until she attended The New School in New York City that she developed an interest in sustainable agriculture and food systems.  In 2007, between her junior and senior years of college, she did a summer apprenticeship with Three Roods Farm in Columbiaville, Michigan.  This small, permaculture CSA taught Melissa the fundamental principles and practices of organic farming and sustainable land management. In 2008, she apprenticed at Charlestown Farm and fell in love not only with the community and Farm, but the philosophy underscoring all our actions and work.  She returned for the 2009 season as the Assistant Manager and became Manager midway through the season.

Lisa Wimble is returning to Charlestown Farm for a second season.  She enjoyed her first season farming so much that she has decided to dedicate herself to a career in sustainable and organic agriculture. Growing up here in Phoenixville, she feels an intimate connection with the area and is eager to see more land in Chester County be used for farming.  She hopes one day to own or manage an education based farm or garden where students of all ages can learn, have fun, and get their hands dirty.  This season, she looks forward to learning more and gaining more responsibility on the Farm and is excited see what is in store for the months ahead.

Leslie Randall is an apprentice for 2010 and is excited to start her first full season farming at Charlestown Farm. She started farming last fall on a small organic CSA in Vancouver, B.C. and quickly fell in love with being outside everyday and having her hands in the dirt! She grew up in rural Ohio and graduated from Otterbein College with a degree in Ecology and Environmental Studies. Her interest in farming started after studying abroad in New Zealand and seeing their progressive farm movement. While finishing her degree she volunteered as a nature guide at Stratford Ecological Center, a non-profit educational farm for children and adults. Now that her farming career is started, she's excited to learn as much as she can about sustainable agriculture from Charlestown Farm.

Daniel Jordan is a first year apprentice, and this is his first season truly farming! Born and raised just down the road in Frazer, he spent two months in a Spanish immersion program in Guatemala, and about three months in Thailand. He took a few scattered college courses, and is a certified EMT. He's been trying many different professions, from baking and boxing to paper pushing and painting, and thinks he has finally found his niche in farming. He looks forward to seeding and eating his way through the whole season at Charlestown Farm this year and making more travel plans.

Ellie Andersen is a junior at The Shipley School. She leads family cooking workshops for Farm members and organizes Farm efforts to reach out to our larger community. Ellie's projects include:

1. Comida Saludable Familia Saludable (Healthy Food Healthy Families): A program to enable Guatemalan women with children to trade work for farm membership and access to high quality fruits and vegetables, cooking lesson, and farm social events. This program will help assimilate Phoenixville's burgeoning Guatemalan community and enable members of the community to avoid health problems associated with poor access to healthful foods.

2. Charlestown Gleaning: A program organized with a church serving Phoenixville's Hispanic community to enable church members to glean Farm fields. This program began in 2009 and will be expanded in 2010

3. Youth Farming: Programs for organizations such as the Triskeles Foundations and local colleges and universities such as Swarthmore, Penn, Haverford, and Bryn Mawr to give students the opportunity to work on the Farm to gain exposure to farming, food issues, and an appreciation of the importance of eating healthfully.

Arne Andersen helps with many aspects of the farming operation including mechanical weed cultivation, tillage, caring for layers and broilers, equipment repair, and sweet corn production. Arne constructed much of the patio and substructure for the wood fired cob oven and in 2010 will timber frame an open air structure to shelter the oven and patio. Arne has a strong interest in cooking and makes pizza equivalent to Italy's best in the cob oven. Arne is a freshman at Amherst College and a member of the lacrosse team.

Charlie Andersen has long been fascinated by farm tractors and located and purchased most of the Farm's equipment. He does extensive tractor work and implemented a number of alternative energy projects (see the sustainable practices section) including the hoophouse for which he was awarded a DEP Energy Harvest Grant to showcase a locally produced carbon neutral renewable energy source - corn. He has served on the PA Ag Energy Council and the UN Commission for Renewable Energy and created the Farm website. Charlie just graduated from Amherst College and will attend Harvard Business School to pursue a career bringing alternative energy to farming.

Katy Andersen has a passion for food and farming and helps on the Farm when she is in town and offers continual suggestions for how to improve the operation and connect with the local food community. Katy spent last year in Italy studying small scale cheese production on a Fulbright Scholarship. She graduated from Princeton University where she founded the university farmers' market. Katy is attending Harvard Business School pursuing a career related to food and farming.
