In addition to providing our CSA members with fresh local food and bringing them together for educational and social events, we recognize that Charlestown Farm can help our larger community. Under the leadership of Ellie Andersen, we have developed projects that use the Farm's unique resources to improve nutrition in the growing local Hispanic community and introduce young people to farming and healthful eating through the following projects:

1. Comida Saludable Familia Saludable: A program to enable Guatemalan women with children to trade work for farm membership and access to high quality fruits and vegetables, cooking lessons, and farm social events. This program helps assimilate Phoenixville's burgeoning Guatemalan community and enable members of the community to avoid health problems associated with poor access to healthful foods.

2. Charlestown Gleaning: A program organized with a church serving Phoenixville's Hispanic community to enable church members to glean Farm fields. This program began in 2009 and will be expanded in 2010

3. Youth Farming: Since 2007, Charlestown Farm has hosted the Food For Thought Programs for the Triskeles Foundations as well as tours and work days for local colleges and universities such as Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr, Penn and Haverford. These programs give students the opportunity to work on the Farm to gain exposure to farming and food issues plus an appreciation of the importance of eating healthfully. We plan to expand these programs in 2010.
